The Baltimore Sun

WILLIAM IVAN (BILL) SHORTER passed away, peacefully, without pain and with a smile on his face, January 20, 2009 at the Genesis Loch Raven Center in Baltimore. Bill was born in Baltimore, MD to William Eugene and Bernice Iva Hawkins. Bill was a proud graduate of the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania (where he received his Bachelors in Mathematics) and Cornell University in New York (where he received his Masters in Applied Mathematics). Bill married Minnie C. Waters in Rockville, MD. He was a devoted husband. Beloved father of Jaakan M. Shorter and Asher J. (A.J.) Shorter. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He went to work for Verizon as a manager, retiring after 20 years of service. He worked on projects involving such things as ISDN and Packet Switches. One of his proudest projects was bringing one of the first internet providers, Prodigy, to Maryland. After his retirement, he volunteered at his son's schools, Baltimore County Public Library, St. Ignatius Loyola Academy and the Maryland Science Center. The family will receive friends at Vaughn Greene-East, 4905 York Road, Baltimore 21212, on January 28, 2009 from 10 to 10:30. A memorial service will follow at 10:30.
